LRSD Ward Review Survey 2018

In alignment with expectations of the School Act, Livingstone Range School Division No.
68 is conducting an electoral ward boundary review to ensure its population is represented
with an appropriate number of trustees.

The history of our division is that on August 25, 1994, then Education Minister Halvar
Jonson signed an Establishment Order creating Livingstone Range Regional Division No.
68, which came into effect on January 1, 1995.

The number of trustees was established as seven members. Based on the 2017 provincial
census, the population of the region was approximately 27,656 residents, thus each trustee
represents about 3,951 citizens.
Seven trustees are presently elected in three wards:

Ward 1 includes the MD’s of Ranchlands, the northern portion of the MD of Willow Creek
and the towns of Nanton, Stavely, Claresholm and Granum. Two trustees represent this area
in a ratio of approximately 5359 residents per trustee.

Ward 2 includes the north-western portion of the MD of Pincher Creek, the Municipality of
Crowsnest Pass and the village of Cowley. Two trustees represent this area in a ratio of
approximately 3424 residents per trustee.

Ward 3 includes southern portion of the MD of Willow Creek, the south-eastern portion of
the MD of Pincher Creek and the towns of Fort MacLeod and Pincher Creek. Three
trustees represent this area in a ratio of approximately 3364 residents per trustee.

The Board will examine a number of options, including:
• No change to the present system of representation (3 wards- 7 trustees)
• Adding trustee(s) to better represent the area
• Lowering the number of trustee(s) to better represent the areas
• Defining electoral ward boundaries to include one trustee per ward (7 wards- 7
trustees)
• More closely aligning ward boundaries to school attendance boundaries

Please take a moment to share your thoughts and complete the following survey. The Board
will use your responses to inform their decision at an open Board meeting, later in the fall.

Thank you,
Brad Toone.
